Mexico City Design Week October 7-12, 2026

Heritage by Hand invites you to join us in Mexico City for Design Week Mexico, October 7–12, 2026 — one of the most exciting weeks of the year in one of the world's great design capitals. Design Week Mexico transforms the city into a living exhibition. Events and open houses unfold across neighborhoods, the iconic Design House showcases rooms curated by dozens of Mexico's most innovative designers, and Inédito spotlights emerging talent worth watching. It's immersive, inspiring, and unlike most design fairs you've attended.

Between Design Week venues, we'll visit galleries, textile artists, and museums that reveal the deeper layers of Mexico City's creative culture. And because this is a Heritage by Hand trip, we'll eat very well — at both established institutions and the kind of up-and-coming restaurants that remind you why Mexico City is considered one of the world's great gastronomic cities.

This trip pairs beautifully with our History and Craft at the Original Artisan Fair in Mérida, October 12–17 — continue straight from Design Week into the Yucatán for an immersive artisan experience. Many guests choose to do both.

Itinerary

Wednesday, October 7 — Arrival & First Evening
Arrive in Mexico City and settle into your apartment in the Hipodromo/Condesa neighborhood by Parque Mexico. That evening we meet for a neighborhood stroll and an introduction to the local taco scene — a simple, delicious beginning to the week.

Thursday, October 8 — Design House & San Miguel Chapultepec Galleries
After an optional morning walk and breakfast in the neighborhood, we visit the Design House — the centerpiece of Design Week Mexico, where dozens of Mexico's most innovative designers transform a single residence into a room-by-room showcase of contemporary Mexican design. Translators are available if needed. After lunch in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood, we spend the afternoon touring several of the city's most important contemporary art galleries and design studios in this gallery-dense district near Chapultepec Park. Dinner together in the neighborhood to close the day.

Friday, October 9 — Downtown Museums & Inédito
We head downtown in the morning to visit two of Mexico City's finest museums — one a world-class decorative arts collection housed in a stunning colonial building, the other a significant private museum focused on Mexican painting from the 18th century to the present. After lunch in the Juarez neighborhood, we spend the afternoon exploring its ceramic showrooms, clothing and homewares designers, and a perfume studio whose organic, garden-set space is one of the most beautiful interiors in the city. In the early evening we attend the opening of Inédito — Design Week's main showcase for established and emerging Mexican designers — before returning to the neighborhood.

Saturday, October 10 — Textile Studio & San Angel
We begin with a visit to a favorite textile studio before heading to the south side of the city. We visit the house where Gabriel García Márquez wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude, set within a neighborhood designed in the 1940s by the legendary architect Luis Barragán. After lunch at a restaurant within one of Barragán's landmark properties, we spend the afternoon at the recently opened Frida Kahlo museum in Coyoacán, Casa Roja, and stroll through Coyoacán.

Sunday, October 11 — Polanco Design Events & National Museum of Anthropology
Sunday takes us to Polanco for Design Week's container showroom event — a pop-up showcase of Mexican designers set in a central park — followed by open-house visits to designer studios around the city. We also visit the National Museum of Anthropology — one of the great museums of the world — for at least an hour. The recently opened Ethnographic Hall is not to be missed. We return to the neighborhood for a break before our closing dinner together.

Monday, October 12 — Departure or Mérida
Those departing fly home. Those continuing join the Mérida group for the Original Artisan Fair extension, October 12–17.

Daily Rhythm

Each day follows a general structure with flexibility built in. An optional morning walk or run through the Hipodromo neighborhood — built around a historic velodrome and one of the city's most beautiful green circuits — is available most mornings. Breakfast is optional and nearby. Mornings are reserved for Design Week events and galleries; afternoons for museums, neighborhoods, and further exploration. At least one or two afternoon breaks are built into the week to rest, shop, or explore independently. Dinner is typically at 7 PM or later, with occasional optional evening events.

General Information

What the program fee covers: All ground transportation to and from events during the trip, a translator at Design Week events if needed, speaking fees for any artist visits or studio tours, reservation deposits for two dinners, and museum admissions. Tips and incidentals are the responsibility of each participant.

What participants cover independently: International airfare to and from Mexico City, lodging (apartment recommendations in the Hipodromo/Condesa neighborhood will be provided so the group stays together), all meals, event entrance fees, and airport transfers. Airport pickup can be arranged if several flights arrive close together.

You will arrive on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 7th, and the itinerary begins that evening. We will have some flexibility in our routine to take advantage of opportunities that arise.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Health and Activity Levels

There will be a moderate to significant amount of daily walking (10,000+ steps). Mexico City is a mile-high city — participants with altitude sensitivity may wish to arrive a day early to adjust. If you have not visited Mexico City and wish to see Teotihuacan or other sites, we suggest arriving early or staying an extra day. We are happy to help with recommendations.
