Mexico City Original Textile Fair November 27-December 1, 2026

$600.00

Join Heritage by Hand from November 27–December 1, 2026 as we visit Mexico City’s premier textile and handmade event, Original — now in its sixth edition, developed to support and celebrate the mastery and intellectual property rights of Mexican artisans. This trip is intentionally scheduled right after Thanksgiving — a perfect way to start the holiday season with something meaningful, beautiful, and far from the ordinary.

We will attend Original twice over the long weekend, with an artist joining us for lunch at the fair. Beyond the fair, we explore the city’s finest galleries, museums, and neighborhoods — including a Sunday on the water at the ancient chinampas of Xochimilco and a full afternoon in the south of the city. Mexico City is also one of the world’s great gastronomic capitals, and we will eat very well throughout.

This trip pairs beautifully with our Exploring Textiles and History in Puebla and Tlaxcala, December 1–5 — continue straight from Mexico City into Puebla for an immersive textile journey. Many guests choose to do both.

About Original

Original is Mexico’s most important showcase for master artisans — a curated fair held at Los Pinos, the former presidential residence, now a cultural center, in Chapultepec Park. The fair brings together hundreds of artisans from across Mexico whose work represents the highest level of craft tradition and innovation. Translators are available throughout our visits, and Heritage by Hand will introduce you to specific artists and guide you through the fair each morning.

Itinerary

Friday, November 27 — Arrival & Opening Evening at Original
Arrive in Mexico City and settle into your apartment in the Hipodromo/Condesa neighborhood by Parque Mexico. That evening we head to Original for the opening catwalk show — a highlight of the fair’s program — before dinner at the fair or at a beloved neighborhood restaurant known for its rotating regional Mexican menus.

Saturday, November 28 — Original Fair & San Miguel Chapultepec Galleries
After an optional morning walk and breakfast in the neighborhood, we spend the morning at Original, exploring the fair with maps and a translator available as needed. An artist from the fair joins us for lunch in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood — just across the street from Los Pinos — one of the city’s most gallery-dense districts. The afternoon is spent visiting several of Mexico City’s most important contemporary art galleries in the neighborhood. For those who have not visited the National Museum of Anthropology, it is nearby and well worth an hour — the recently opened Ethnographic Hall and the textile collections are not to be missed. We return to the neighborhood for a break before dinner together.

Sunday, November 29 — Xochimilco, Dolores Olmedo & MUAC
A full day on the south side of the city — one of the most rewarding and least-visited parts of Mexico City for most travelers. We begin with a Sunday brunch on the ancient chinampas of Xochimilco — the floating gardens that have fed the city for centuries, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — drifting along the canals in a trajinera before heading to the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which holds one of the finest private collections of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera paintings in the world, set in a stunning hacienda with peacocks roaming the grounds. We close the afternoon at MUAC — the contemporary art museum of the National Autonomous University of Mexico — one of the most architecturally striking and curatorially ambitious museums in the country, with an excellent bookstore on site.

Monday, November 30 — Juarez Neighborhood, Zócalo & Historic Center
Our final full day begins in the Juarez neighborhood — one of the city’s most vibrant districts for design, ceramics, homewares, and fashion — with time to browse at your own pace. After lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant offering a brilliant fusion of Indian and Mexican flavors, we head downtown to the Zócalo — the historic heart of Mexico City — to visit the Cathedral, the Templo Mayor ruins, and se a tremendous number of important murals. We close with a farewell dinner together before those continuing to Puebla prepare for an early departure the following morning.

Tuesday, December 1 — Departure or Puebla & Tlaxcala Extension
Those departing fly home. Those continuing join the Puebla group for departure to Puebla and Tlaxcala for an immersive textile journey with master weavers Ignacio and Pedro Netzahualcoyotl.

Daily Rhythm

Each day follows a general structure with flexibility built in. An optional morning walk or run through the Hipodromo neighborhood — built around a historic velodrome and one of the city’s most beautiful green circuits — is available most mornings. Breakfast is optional and nearby. At least one afternoon break is built into the weekend to rest, shop, or explore independently.

General Information

What the program fee covers: All ground transportation to and from events during the trip, a translator at Original if needed, speaking fees for any artist visits or studio tours, and two dinner deposits.

What participants cover independently: International airfare to and from Mexico City, lodging (apartment recommendations in the Hipodromo/Condesa neighborhood will be provided so the group stays together), all meals, museum admissions, airport transfers and driver tips. Airport pickup can be arranged if several flights arrive close together.

You will arrive on the afternoon of Friday, November 27th, and the itinerary begins that evening. We will have some flexibility in our routine to take advantage of opportunities that arise.

Pricing

$1,200 per person
Deposit: $600 due upon booking
Final payment: $600 due August 30, 2026
Maximum 11 guests. Trips typically host 6–8 participants.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancel before August 30, 2026: full refund
  • Cancel after August 30, 2026: no refund

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Health and Activity Levels

There will be a moderate to significant amount of daily walking (10,000+ steps). Mexico City is a mile-high city — participants with altitude sensitivity may wish to arrive a day early to adjust. Sunday involves travel to the south side of the city with some uneven terrain at Xochimilco. Please keep your physical abilities in mind when booking.
