Sugimoto Pillow

$145.00

The fine lines of the Sugimoto pillow were inspired by the seascapes of contemporary Japanese photography artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto. This seemingly simple yet impactful weave forms a subtle yet striking element to a living or sleeping space. It is versatile and contemporary in feel, with a rich artisanal texture and the highest quality of detailing.

The front of the pillow is woven in a traditional dhurrie weaving cluster outside Jaipur. The indigo has been naturally dyed in organic vats in Maharashtra. The weaving of Nila dhurries, using natural indigo yarns and white space, involves an enormous amount of skill, as they are created on pit looms in Rajasthan and the colors need to remain separate while the weaving process continues. Because of the Nila House ethos and use of natural dyes, they do not finish the weave with softening chemicals as is now standard practice. The finish of the actual weave needs to be softer and more breathable than that of a traditional dhurrie, leaving this cushion smooth to the touch.

The back of the pillow is made of handwoven cotton, with an invisible zipper. Inside seams are finished with a fine, handwoven cotton piping to prevent fraying.
