Shade 6 Handloom Indigo Linen Tablecloth

$300.00

100% handwoven linen table cloth dyed with natural indigo made in Kerala, India by Nila House in Jaipur Rajastan, India.

Each shade number refers to the number of times the yarns have been dipped into the indigo vat. Each dip brings a deeper shade of blue that usually require 24-hour intervals between each dip. The yarns were dyed in Maharasthra using purely natural processes. Linen, usually woven on heavy-duty factory machines, changes structure considerably when adapted to handloom. The openness of the weave lends these tablecloths a textured lightness and breathability.

The weaving was carried out by the Kanhirode Weavers’ Cooperative Society in Kerala. The weavers are mostly female and elderly; they all take a share of profits. The generous hems are finished with mitered corners, stitched by the women of this social enterprise. It is highly unusual to see handloom pieces of such wide width being woven on a loom by hand. This takes enormous skill and patience, as the length of time to weave on meter doubles on a 92-inch loom such as the one used for this production.

The tablecloths will soften with regular washing. Once ironed, the fabric regains its original crispness. Pair with the Shade 0 Napkin or Shade 3 Napkin.
