San Lucas Collection - Volcanic Stone Lighting

SAN LUCAS COLLECTION

From the town of San Lucas Evangelista in Tlajomulco, Jalisco, comes this collection crafted by artisan families who have specialized in working volcanic stone. This material is iconic in Mexico, traditionally used to create molcajetes—those traditional Mesoamerican mortars widely used in Mexican cuisine.

Being so resistant, basaltic stone requires technical precision and proper use of the tools with which it is shaped. Master stone workers can use up to 18 chisels in their craft. Such is the force and work required in its design that artisans can produce only three pieces per day.
