Embera Horse Masks
Our Embera mask collection is made by two master weavers, Rosa Cabrera and Erenia Cabrera of Sambu, in the Embera-Wounaan Comarca in the Darien Gap border region of Panama. They were historically made for healing and cleansing ceremonies. Today, artists use their imagination to create a variety of animal designs that are not traditionally found in Panama, from lions to zebras and beyond. Our favorite remains the horse mask, which we can special order to any size if not in stock.
Each mask is made of woven chunga (fibers called werregue in Colombian Wounaan communities) over naguala frames. Each piece ranges in size from 20-40 inches long.
Special order only.
